Adoption Requirements

In order for us to find the best pet for you and the best forever home for our animals, we need some information from you.  To begin the adoption process, please complete the applicable application (Dog Adoption Application or please contact us for a Cat Adoption Application), and return it to us at either the e-mail address or fax number provided on our Contact Us Page.

Once we've received your application, we review your information and contact your references and veterinarian.  You will be contacted by our Adoption Coordinator with the results of our review, to discuss the animal you are interested in adopting, and to let you know if a home visit is required.  Our review usually takes 2--5 business days, depending on the availability of your references.

Think we're asking for too much information?

Well, we admit that we are picky--but, it is so important that we find the best animal for your situation (and the best situation for our animals) the first time.  We want to do all that we can to ensure that your new addition fits in well with your household.  We have had spectacular success with our adoption process--rarely do we have a pet returned to us.

What if after adopting one of our animals, you are not able to keep the animal?

SCHS requires that at the time of adoption you agree that if you are unable to keep the animal for any reason that you will return the animal to SCHS.

How much is it to adopt one of our animals?  How does SCHS use the adoption fee?

The Adoption Fee for a dog is $125, and is $75 for a cat.  This fee helps to cover the cost to provide the proper care for the animal including food and veterinarian examinations and services. We average about $175 in costs per animal, and the remaining costs are covered by donations.  We are very fortunate to have area veterinarians who discount services for our animals!  Ask your vet how much it would cost for an examination, applicable vaccinations and preventatives, and altering!  We bet it will be a lot more than $175!  Many or our animals have been on their own for a while, so we often have the additional costs of treating various ailments such as heartworm or other parasites.
